Sports Concussion Evaluation

A concussion is an injury caused by a sudden blow to the head. Though the brain is normally surrounded by a fluid cushion, in the case of a sudden impact the brain can crash into the skull. This may cause a temporary loss of normal function, including loss of consciousness, confusion, dizziness, loss of memory, seeing stars, blurred vision or other symptoms. An athlete with any concussion symptoms should not return to play without further evaluation.
Sports-related concussions are becoming more common. For years, evaluation has been difficult and based on opinion rather than objective evidence. The Neurological Institute at Good Shepherd has brought the ImPACT testing system to the East Texas area. Athletes are administered a baseline test and if they sustain a concussion on the field, the baseline results can be used to reliably assess their neurological status and risk of return to play. This system is currently used by the Dallas Cowboys and many other professional and college teams. The Neurological Institute works in conjunction with the Good Shepherd Sports Medicine Program and local coaches and trainers to implement this program.
